A Rustic Barn Wedding in Somerset // Kate & Matthew
The farm belongs to Kate’s family. It’s an incredible setting in the Somerset countryside surrounded by rolling fields with horses and even alpacas. When I was last there, I thought it was really lovely – a beautiful old farmhouse with a stone barn and stables. But the barn was just a traditional barn… full of farmyard-y things. However, Kate and her family had now completely transformed it into stunning venue for their wedding reception.
To create space for all the tables, they’d added a marquee and turned the barn into a bar and dance floor but made sure that it still had that relaxed, rustic feel with so many amazing details. Flowers had been cut from the garden and arranged in barrels and wheelbarrows and in jam jars on wooden table centrepieces. Even the holes in the barn walls had been used to display candles and tea-lights which, with the strings of fairy lights, gave a beautiful soft light.
The wedding ceremony was held in the Church of St Peter in Evercreech. Kate’s dress was by Augusta Jones (from Clifton Brides) and her shoes were bespoke – designed and made by one of her bridesmaids. The bridesmaids themselves wore bright blue dresses which looked great with the flowers that Kate had chosen for the bouquets. Matt and his groomsmen started the day in matching sharp suits from Clifton Suits. However, later during the reception, Matt showed that he was ready to embrace his new rural lifestyle and changed into a great tweed waistcoat.
Kate and Matt and their friends are all lovely, and I had such a fun day shooting this wedding. Sadly, it was rather rainy for most of the afternoon, so we couldn’t head off to the fields for the couple’s portraits as I’d hoped. Luckily the farmhouse provided a gorgeous rustic backdrop and I was really pleased with the pictures that I got of the two of them.
I also loved the speeches – they were ace, especially when Kate tried to give hers. She was determined to show that women could speak just as well as men, but immediately welled up as soon as she started to say anything and then couldn’t stop laughing. It was brilliant and hilarious and she got through it in the end!
